Nike Cortez at XTREME: the classic that changed running

The Nike Cortez grew out of the work of Bill Bowerman, Nike co-founder and legendary track and field coach, always looking for ways to help his athletes go further. The shoe was the result of many rounds of prototypes and ended up sparking a genuine revolution in running footwear, launching in the late 1960s.

The Cortez brought a level of cushioning previously unknown to American distance runners, by combining a full-length midsole with a layer of sponge rubber beneath the upper — a combination that would go on to become an industry standard. In 1971, an influential running magazine called it the most popular long-distance training shoe in the US.

With extra padding at the ball of the foot, more cushioning in the heel and its signature herringbone traction pattern, the Cortez redefined the standards of cushioning and grip of its era.

Despite its running roots, the Cortez available today is designed for everyday wear, not for running: Nike itself positions it as a street shoe, made with materials like leather, suede and textile, without the technology found in the brand's current performance running shoes.

At XTREME you'll find the Nike Cortez in different materials and colors. Shop in an XTREME store or order at xtreme.pt and get it delivered wherever you like.
